Choosing DTF Transfer Size

What Size DTF Transfers Should I Order For Women's Shirts?

For women's shirts, a 9" by 9" DTF Transfer design typically works the best.

Although there can be a large variance in sizing between a Women's XS and a Women's 2XL, we still find that the 9" by 9" sizing works well.

What Size DTF Transfers Should I Order For Youth Sizes?

For youth shirts, a 8" by 8" DTF Transfer is suitable.

Although there's a fairly large variance in sizing between a Youth XS and a Youth L & Youth XL, an 8" by 8" DTF Transfer design is still suitable.

What Size Transfers Should I Order For Adult Shirts? 2XL - 5XL

For adult shirts, even with a size scale of Adult S through Adult 5XL, 11" by 11" or larger is recommended.

However, with DTF transfers you are able to modify the sizes as you like and still retain the bulk discount pricing on the whole order.

If you prefer to modify the design size based on shirt size, we recommend the following:

  • Adult Small through 2XL: 11" by 11" or larger
  • Adult 3XL through 5XL: 12" by 14" or larger

Tool and Tips

What Are DTF Transfers?

DTF Transfers, or Direct to Film Transfers, offer a revolutionary way to apply any image to various materials and colors without the technical printing constraints of the past.

Each transfer is created using the same underbase, ensuring consistency across materials, simplifying the process, and giving you confidence in the outcome of every order.

DTF transfers have no limitations on color range, the number of colors, or quantity you can order, eliminating the concerns associated with traditional screen printing transfers. Unlike screen printing, where ink types must match the garments, DTF transfers offer a cost-effective solution for both small and high-color-count orders.

You no longer need to be a t-shirt expert. Enhance the profitability and consistency of your orders with DTF transfers.

DTF Transfers: Hot Vs. Cool Peel

WAKU Prints offers premium DTF Transfers that are suitable for both hot and cold peel applications.

Here's how to use them:

  1. Apply medium pressure at 300°F-320°F (160°C) for 12-15 seconds.
  2. Release pressure and heat, allowing the transfer to cool for at least 15 seconds.
  3. Once the transfer has cooled to the touch, gently peel it back from one corner while applying even pressure.
  4. For an enhanced feel, increased durability, and reduced shine, place the included parchment paper over the design and press again for 15 seconds.

How to Machine Wash:
  1. Turn your pressed shirt inside-out before washing.
  2. Separate similar colors, weight, and textures. Avoid overfilling the washer.
  3. Use mild detergent with cold water on a gentle cycle.
  4. Warm water, harsh detergents, and aggressive wash cycles can damage both the garment and the transfer itself.
How to Dry:

We recommend hang-drying on a plastic hanger, but a dryer works fine if you follow these steps:

  1. Turn your pressed shirts inside-out before drying.
  2. Separate similar colors, weight, and textures.
  3. Use the lowest possible heat setting or Permanent Press.

  2. Press: Press your DTF transfer with medium pressure at 300°F-320°F (160°C) for 12-15 seconds.
  3. Cool & Peel: After pressing your DTF transfer onto the garment, let your transfer cool for a minimum of 15 seconds. Once the transfer feels cool to the touch, lift the transfer from one corner and gently peel back while applying even pressure.
  4. Final Press: Place the parchment paper included with your order on the design and press again for 15 seconds to enhance feel, increase durability, and remove shine.

How is DTF Different from DTG?

If you are familiar with DTG or Direct to Garment printing, you may be wondering about the pros and cons when compared to DTF printing. Both options are digital and require no screens or art separation as required with screen printing.

In fact, when DTG was first introduced to the apparel decoration industry, it was applauded as the ultimate solution, especially for printing multi-color designs and low quantities. However, many who jumped on the DTG bandwagon soon learned of the limitations of the DTG process. DTG printers can have steep learning curves, including a complicated pretreatment process. You are also limited to certain garment types and may have limited placement options on each shirt or item. With DTF, there is no pretreatment process, you print directly onto film instead of fabric, and you can print your transfers in advance. While there are many advantages of DTF over DTG, some things both processes have in common are the high expense, labor-intensive artwork prep, and time-consuming learning curve. Neither DTG nor DTF will ever replace direct screen printing, but they are both important digital options to consider.

Comparing DTF to Other Transfers

When comparing DTF (Direct to Film) transfers to other transfer methods, it's evident that DTF offers several advantages. Unlike heat transfer vinyl, DTF eliminates the need for cutting and weeding your images. In the realm of digital transfers, DTF is often the more cost-effective choice, particularly for designs with multiple colors and lower quantities, typically under 35 pieces.

From a quality perspective, DTF transfers excel with crisp, well-defined edges, making it effortless to print floating text and intricate lines. What sets DTF apart is its suitability for small quantity orders and user-friendliness. You have the same level of artwork flexibility as sublimation transfers, but DTF offers the added advantage of printing on various fabric types beyond cotton.

Moreover, DTF allows printing on both dark and light-colored garments, unlike sublimation, which is often limited to white or light-colored shirts.

The Process of Direct-to-Film Printing Basic Steps
STEP 1 – CREATE YOUR ART

If you plan to print your own DTF transfers, preparing the artwork is essential. Invest in high-quality raster image processor (RIP) software that translates computer files into a printable matrix of dots. The software you choose significantly impacts print quality, ink characteristics, and color accuracy.

For DTF, specialized RIP software that handles both CMYK and white is necessary. Fine-tuning aspects like color profiling, ink levels, and droplet sizes are crucial for optimal results. Replicating precise customer colors demands time and attention.

STEP 2 – PRINTING YOUR IMAGE IN COLOR AND WHITE

Begin by printing the entire image in CMYK on PET film, different from screen printing films. PET films come in various quality levels, including gloss or matte, available in hot and cold peel variants.

After CMYK printing, apply the white layer behind the image to ensure the process works. The image should be a mirror-image of the final appearance on fabric.

STEP 3 – POWDERING

Apply hot-melt powder to the printed film with the image. DTF adhesive powder varies in grades specified in microns. Ensure uniform powder application while the print is still wet, removing excess powder with care. Quality-conscious printers use automatic powder shakers for even distribution. Different powders affect fabric compatibility, texture, flexibility, and print durability.

STEP 4 – CURING THE POWDER

Melt or cure the applied powder, using a curing oven, dryer, or a heat press. This step prepares the transfer for stacking, shipping, and heat application.

STEP 5 – HEAT PRESS ONTO GARMENT

When ready to print shirts, use a heat press. DTF transfers typically require application at 300-320°F for 10-20 seconds or as low as 280-290°F for 12 seconds with medium pressure. Some DTF transfers allow immediate film removal after heat application, streamlining the process.
